Review:

Women are going missing. 

Sometimes they end up on an island of other women and that’s where they stay. Amma looks after them, brings them food and tends to them, brings men to give the women work. The system seems to work to them. It’s all some of them have known. It’s all the children know. They know they’ll become the women one day. That is, unless someone interrupts the cycle. 

This is one of those brilliant books where the title is an ever so slight giveaway on what may or may not happen, but it doesn’t act as a spoiler and instead inspires intrigue.

Told through the eyes of the children of the island, it’s told with such intrigue and innocence despite the layers of darkness. I really appreciated how this narrative was told and definitely makes it very easy to devour the book. 

The story unfolds and the uprising reveals itself, but the plot isn’t a straight line. It’s turns one way and another because revolution is never simple.  But feminine rage is always there at the centre.

It’s beautifully written and certainly packs a punch in a small number of pages. I definitely need to read Anam’s backlog!
