Eldest Daughters as Readers

It’s time to spill the tea. I think this this a terrible combination – the eldest daughter and reader combo. As an eldest daughter, over the years I’ve felt like some of those traits clash terribly with being a reader so let’s talk about it.

Reviewing books. I can’t tell you how much I struggle to review books I don’t like. It’s hard not to be a people pleaser but it’s just a review and not every book is for everyone and that’s so okay.

The struggle of DNF (Did Not Finish). In the past (and still now to a point!) I’ve seriously struggled with DNF’ing a book. It’s definitely linked to a fear of failure – because yes of course it’s me that has failed and not the book! (Yes I know that sounds ridiculous!).

Shelf perfection. Oh the age old perfectionism. The must have picture perfect shelves, must have completed series in all the same format, books must be kept in perfect condition.. must have perfection! I often remind myself it doesn’t need to be perfect to be enjoyed. Shelves are messy and ever changing. Spines can be cracked and that’s okay.

But I wouldn’t change these for the world. Reading is such a joy. It’s a place for learning, for escapism and it can also be a space for friendship and healing too.

Is this resonating with you? Drop me a comment and let me know!
