One sentence summary: How does friendship fare when dreams and hopes of romance are involved?
One sentence review: A beautifully light and delicate literary novel, set in beautiful Edinburgh.
Review:
Dao and Sunny’s paths cross in Edinburgh: one is there to study, one is there to work. Friendship blossoms easily between them as they find comfort in each other.
But their dreams trip them up and they struggle to face each other. With friendship at stake and outside pressures, how will they find themselves again?
Oh how I loved this book! I loved Wangtechawat’s debut and was so ready for this one, and it truly did not disappoint.
This book is delicate like twinkling fairy lights and the light clink of a tea spoon in tea cups. It’s beautiful and will hold you tight in it. Both protagonists are finding their way in new lands and their friendship at the beginning is so wholesome. There’s beauty and sadness to boot.
Sometimes I think the true success of a book is when the characters truly get under your skin and live with you, they feel like long lost friends or stories your friend has told you. Wangtechawat has achieved this in bucket loads. I read this over a month ago and I’m still thinking of Dao and Sunny.
I love Edinburgh and this felt like a true love story to the city, it’s made me pine to be back there. It’s captured the essence of the city perfectly. I need to go back!
If you loved her debut, The Moon Represents My Heart, then I think you’ll adore this book too. It’s not in verse but it has the same beauty and gentleness and feels like a beautiful second novel.
