One sentence summary: Fleeing from your past will always catch up with you, but never in the way Lucy expected.
One sentence review: Boulley’s best work to date and a brilliant return to Sugar Island.
Review:
Lucy has been passed around foster homes, desperate to get away from her past, but it just won’t shake her.
Honestly, what a book.
I loved it, just as much as I loved Firekeeper’s Daughter and Warrior Girl Unearthed. It gripped me just like Boulley’s other work and had me on edge through its twists and turns. My heart was in my throat as the last quarter came round and I absolutely cried at multiple points.
Told over multiple timelines, the past is pieced together and catches up with the present brilliantly. It adds all the beautiful tension and anticipation that you want in a book like this. It’s pacy and exciting throughout without leaving out all the emotion that will pull at your heartstrings.
Lucy is spiky and prickly for all the right reasons and slotted perfectly into Sugar Islands narrative. I absolutely loved coming back to Jamie and Daunis too. She’s the perfect addition and watching her bloom was just stunning.
It’s a beautiful addition to her other releases and maybe even my favourite of hers. This book felt closer to Firekeepers Daughter than it did Warrior Girl Unearthed and I loved it for it.
There’s some difficult and dark topics covered so please check for warnings or feel free to message me if you want to check for something too.
A huge huge huge thank you to Rock the Boat for this proof. Sisters in the Wind is out next month and if you loved FKD then I can’t recommend pre-ordering enough.
