Bookshop Visit – The New Bookshop, Cockermouth

Having spent a lot of my childhood in the Lake District, I’m totally desensitised to the name of the town this next bookshop tour takes us to, so we’ll move swiftly on, but I’m excited to introduce a bookshop I remember fondly from my childhood: The New Bookshop.

Originally opened in 1968(!), I would sit for hours reading and testing new books before choosing my favourite to take home with me and devour. The floods that devasted the Lake District in 2009 hit the high street badly, and with that, The New Bookshop. It was re-opened in 2010 and while I remember fondly the slightly rustic look from my childhood, the renovations are stunning.

The shop started just in one unit but has grown from the original into the garden and then the property behind and it truly shows! There is such a brilliant range of books in the shop and I was blown away by the diverse range too. I found new releases that Bookstagram hadn’t even picked up on yet which I was so impressed by.

This is a bookshop that will always be close to my heart and if you’re taking a trip to the Lake District then please do pop in and say hi.
