All of my other beginners guides have been genres I’ve loved for years, but in this one, I’ve had to catch up and do some reading first! I’ve only recently been introduced to graphic novels but I have thoroughly loved finding them.
Also – to save myself typing it each time – I absolutely adore the aesthetics in all of these. There’s quite a range between them and I just love them.
Coming of Age:
Welcome to St. Hell – Lewis Hancox. (Followed by Escape from St. Hell). This one also comes under the umbrella of memoir/autobiography but it fits better under here I feel. Lewis talks and shows us through his transition. (Trans rep!)
Cheer Up! Love and Pompoms – Crystal Fraiser & Val Wise. Joining the cheer team feeling like the odd one out is quite the cliched American high school experience, but this one is much more fun!
Literary:
Wash Day Diaries – Jamila Rowser. Four best friends with four stories to tell. I loved the intertwining of these stories and there’s great mental health storylines too.
Romance:
Brielle and Bear – Salomey Doku. Okay I’m obsessed with this series already and it’s only the first one. Fairy tale loving Brielle starts college and meets quite the range of people! Love it.
Fantasy:
Mooncakes – Suzanne Walker. The perfect autumn read! Witches and werewolves and lots of magic feature heavily here. Sapphic rep too. Cosy fantasy reading.
Nimona – Noelle Stevenson. If teenage female rage and kicking your enemies butt is up your street then definitely pick this one up. The Netflix adaptation isn’t bad either!
Lunar Boy – Cin Wibowo & Jes Winobo. Absolutely adorable. Middle Grade, all about family, found family and belonging. Stunning landscapes and interplanetary travel. Brilliant LGBTQIA+ rep.
It’s been so great reading through these to find them for you to recommend! Let me know which you’re planning to pick up.
If you like what you’ve read and would like to access more content, I’d love if you could take a look at my patreon and consider supporting my content on there too.
