I hope that with this title you know exactly the kind of book I’m talking about; the book that begins with mayhem and continues all the way through. Each chapter adds more chaos to the mix and crescendos into a dramatic finish. The pacing is high but the havoc is higher.
Here are some of my favourites that fall into this category:
Vagabonds – Eloghosa Osunde. The spirits in Lagos guide vagabonds to find each other, setting them up for something monumental in the city. Lives become entwined and reality is called into question. Corruption is ripe and capitalism is king, or is it?
Little Rot – Akaeke Emezi. Emezi’s eighth book follows five individuals with overlapping lives and stories, each needing escapism from their own realities. An exclusive sex party sets off a chain of events that cannot be undone as lives are changed forever.
Medus of the Roses – Navid Sinaki. Anjir’s partner goes missing after a brutal attack that leaves him hospitalised and Anjir is desperate to understand why. They had plans to escape, they were ready to go. Overriding themes and pain and grief surrounding hiding your true self.
Let me know if there’s any others you’d add to this category!
