Science fiction is often bundled with fantasy and while there are of course books that overlap, sci-fi can certainly hold it’s own. For clarity, I’m using the description that it’s a genre that centres imaginary science and technology. So if you’re not sure where to start, let me start you off with some recommendations:
A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams. A classic. I’m hoping this needs no introduction, but in case it does, it’s the first in a long series of Sci-Fi space adventures (I’ve only read the first) and it’s wonderful. One of the few film adaptions I enjoy too.
The Principle of Moments – Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson. The first in a trilogy of epic space saga and one that I couldn’t put down. Perfect for Star Wars fans, we have dual POV and some lovely queer rep too.
Iron Widow – Xiran Jay Zhao. The epitome of female rage, I was obsessed when I first read this and I am desperate to read the next instalment. A retelling loosely based around the first female Chinese empress, we have giant digimon-esque robots and brilliantly crafted storylines.
Edge of Here – Kelechi Okafor. Short stories done well always amaze me and how much can be taken from so few words. Edge of Here is a great example of that.
Prophet – Sin Blache & Helen Macdonald. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year. Nostalgia is pit against humanity and we have the perfectly paired Brit and American on it’s case. Stunning read.
More Perfect – Temi Oh. What would the world look like if all of the technology from your phone and more were implanted into your brain? More Perfect explores the strains on society that this constant information has on us.
And here’s a list from my shelf that I can’t wait to get to:
- Kindred – Olivia Butler
- A Psalm for the Wild Built – Becky Chambers
- This is how to Lose the Time War – Max Gladstone
Sci-Fi has always been a favourite genre of mine to watch and I’m enjoying catching up my reading in the same way. Have you loved any of the above too? Let me know in the comments below!
