One thing I’ve always wanted to write about is the visiting of various bookshops around the country. They are always such a welcoming place, especially to bookworms but I think in general to anyone seeking solace and peace.
So let me start with my local, Pigeon Books.

Pigeon Books started as a local market stall, growing to a rented space and then eventually to the shop that stands before us today. Located on the bustling Albert Road, Pigeon Books set up shop in June 2020, unfortunately bang in the middle of the pandemic. That was obviously never the plan but they’ve continued to grow from strength to strength.
Now owners Mel and Phil (with the help of dog Bear) hold their own monthly book club in the shop as well as author events and other community projects.

Walking into Pigeon Books, you’ll instantly feel at home: bright colours and beautifully filled shelves greet you, sometimes with a happy bark or two from Bear. I particularly love their armchair and art wall which always has me smiling. They recently celebrated Books Are My Bag’s Bookshop Day and had patrons queueing outside the doors!
They have a vast range to choose from including, fiction and non-fiction, a great poetry and best sellers middle isle plus a wonderful kids and middle grade area too. Not only that but they have a hugely diverse range of authors in terms of race and gender, solidifying themselves as all round allies.
Phil is always happy to accommodate any pre-order requests and special orders I have (there have been a few!) and is always ready with recommendations too.
I can’t recommend a visit to Pigeon Books enough if you’re in the area. You can check them out here and also order online too. Let me know if you lend them a visit and definitely say hi from me!
